Mehdi Karroubi’s Norouz Message

English translation on Khordaad88

A short summary from Enduring America:

Karrroubi says that he does not believe in an Islamic Republic which is limited to a few clerics like Ahmadinejad supporters such as Mesbah-Yazdi, Jannati, Shojooni, Hassani, Hosseinian, Ahmad Khatami or an Iran which only includes officials like Ahmadinejad, Mohammad Reza Naqdi, Gholam-Hossein Elham, Saeed Mortazavi, and Jalalladin Farsi (who he says is a murderer). Ridiculing Ayatollah Khamenei’s reference to the “ship of the regime”, he says that the current regime is like a “meagre barge” not a large “galleon”.

Karrtoubi also talks about the martyrs of the street protests, the tortures, the detentions, the press closures and imprisoned journalists and former regime officials.

He says that he will give his life in order to defend the country, Islam and the Islamic Republic, but he adds that he does not believe in a regime that belongs only to a small group and their beliefs.

Criticism of Iran's regime works

An interview with Mohammad Reza Heydari in Aftenposten 16 February 2010, the day before he was granted political asylum in Norway.

Criticism of Iran's regime works

By JOHN Harbo

- Iranian diplomats abroad are loosing confidence in the regime. 27 envoys in Asia and Europe have resigned from their positions, but the regime has prevented this from coming out.

It’s Mohammed Reza Heydari who says this. He was consul at the Iranian embassy in Oslo until the end of the year when he quit his post in protest against the developments in Iran where the authorities now are cracking down on the popular opposition.

- 27 of my colleagues in Asia and Europe have resigned from their positions, but the regime has prevented them from coming out with this, says Heydari to Aftenposten.
Heydari openly criticized the regime after he broke with the embassy, and this triggered harsh reactions from the Iranian side.

- Before I went out publicly they threatened me. A delegation was sent from Tehran to talk to me. They wanted me to publicly deny everything I had said.

- You did not do it. Was it a difficult decision?

- Yes, they wanted me to tell them that everything I had said was a lie. Originally I wanted to resign and go home silently, but colleagues in Tehran told me to stay in Norway and speak out. But it was difficult. My family, especially my wife's brothers are under enormous pressure.

- Does your decision and the fact that colleagues in other countries also want to break with the regime, mean that it is now losing support?

- Yes, also in Tehran colleagues, regular employees in the Foreign Service, have taken part in demonstrations on the people's side. 32 were arrested, and 12 are still in prison.

- How should the West react to Iran?

- It is important for the Iranian people that you condemn the actions. These condemnations must continue. Now the U.S. and EU for the first time condemn Iran for human rights violations rather than criticize the nuclear program.

- Are political protests enough. Would not economic sanctions be more effective?

- The most important thing is to stop the regime’s terror and violence. Economic sanctions must not harm the people, but those in power and the regime. My suggestion is that Western countries do not give representatives of the regime entry permits and do not have talks with them. Bank accounts in Western banks may be blocked. And it is very important that the EU and other countries do not allow children of those in power to come to the West to study when Iranian students are being thrown out of universities, abused and killed in the street.

- You talk about those in power. The religious leadership and the Revolutionary Guards are the two power factors today. And the Guards control important parts of the Iranian economy. Is it possible to target the them directly?

- Several companies that are controlled by the Revolutionary Guards are operating in the United States and Europe. They do not do this openly, but it is up to western intelligence to figure out who they are, and shut them down, block bank accounts and not give entry permits to the Revolutionary Guards people. They buy equipment that are meant for civil purposes, but use it for military purposes.

Heydari broke with Iran in protest against the oppression, and he regards Mir Hossein Mousavi who lined up in the presidential election last summer as an important person in the current situation.

- But what does the opposition want. How many want change within the framework of the regime, and how many want to remove it?

- The opposition who are gathered under the green movement, include all strata of people, and democracy is the goal: release of political prisoners, free speech, free political parties, prevention of human rights violations, securing women's rights, free press and free elections under international control.

- Free elections must mean that there will be a regime change?

- It does. The Iranian people no longer want a religious regime.

- Will the Revolutionary Guards remain loyal in a settlement between the regime and the opposition?

- It has a small but powerful leadership, and many soldiers and members among ordinary people. Those who are further down in the system, will not be loyal when it comes to a settlement, says Mohammed Reza Heydari.

Facts abount Mohammed Reza Heydari:
  • Iranian diplomat. Broke with the regime at the end of the year.
  • Born in Tehran in 1966.
  • Educated at the Iranian Foreign Ministry's university.
  • Has served at various stations abroad for 20 years.
  • Is exited about the clear support for the Iranian opposition, and has applied for a residence permit in Norway.

Asylum case creates a diplomatic crisis between Norway and Iran

From Dagbladet

DIANA BADIA, dba@dagbladet.no

(Dagbladet): Norway's granting of political asylum to the former Iranian top diplomat Mohammed Reza Heydari has led to a diplomatic crisis.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Norwegian ambassador in Tehran was summoned to the Iranian Foreign Ministry in late February.

Here Ambassador Roald Næss was handed a letter in which Iran protested against Norway’s granting of asylum to Heydari.

The Iranian foreign ministry also required that a Norwegian diplomat should leave Iran.

This aroused strong reactions in Norway.

- It is a completely unacceptable response from the Iranian side. The right to seek asylum is pursuant to international conventions, said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in the press release.

- Heydari’s asylum application was considered on an individual basis, and the relevant immigration authorities have decided that he satisfies the conditions for asylum in Norway

Leaving Tehran
The Foreign Ministry dismissed the protests and demanded in return that an Iranian diplomat should leave Norway.

- We do not want to identify the Norwegian or the Iranian diplomat, said Communications Advicer Kjetil Elsebutangen to Dagbladet and elaborated:

- Iranian authorities have made it very clear that their reaction is a reaction against the Norwegian government and not against individuals. This is also the case for the Norwegian authorities.

According to Elsebutangen the Norwegian diplomat will comply with the requirement and leave the country.

- It is not appropriate that he continues his work at the Norwegian Embassy in Iran. But it is important to emphasize that he is thus not "persona non grata" in Iran (unwanted person jour. Note).

Defected
Heydari worked as a consul at the Iranian Embassy in Norway until the beginning of the year when he chose to terminate his position in protest against the human rights violations and the oppression in his country.

In an interview with Dagbladet the diplomat said that the Iranian authorities had refused to accept his resignation.

According to his account, they tried both to threaten and lure him into withdrawing his resignation and his regime-critical statements about the government in Iran.

He feared for his life if he returned to Iran and decided to seek political asylum in Norway.

The asylum application was granted in mid-February.

- We asked for and received a very quick processing by the UDI. We are very, very happy, said a spokesman for the Norwegian-Iranian Support Committee, Saki Rahman to Dagbladet when the decision was announced.

17 February 2010

Mohammad Reza Heydari granted political asylum in Norway

From NRK, the first news agency to announce Heydari’s resignment:

Mohammad Reza Heydari, former consul of Iran in Oslo, and his family, have been granted political asylum in Norway.

Heydari’s case was given express processing in the Directorate of Immigration (UDI).

The former consul was glad when he received the message. “I feel that the Norwegian authorities by doing this are supporting the Iranian opposistion’s struggle for freedom", he said.

Heydari resigned from his post as consul at the Iranian Embassy in December. He has since been criticizing the Iranian authorities openly. The former consul has a spouse and two sons in Norway.

He applied for political asylum because he wants to take part in the Iranian freedom struggle.

- "As of today I consider myself to be a politically independent human rights activist, and I will continue the cooperation with other activists to combat human rights violations in Iran", says Mohammad Reza Heydari.

Important meeting today between Hashemi Rafsanjani & the leader of the Islamic Republic - Rafsanjani's ultimatum to the leader- Stop these shameful & embarassing acts!

Jaras: In a meeting with the leader of the Islamic Republic, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani severely criticized the recent attempts by government agents to arrest the wife of Ali Reza Beheshti, senior advisor to Mousavi, giving an ultimatum to Ayatolla Khamenei and stating that these type of actions are "shameful and embarrassing".

According to Jaras, after the unsuccessful attempt by government agents to arrest Ali Reza Beheshti's (senior advisor to Mousavi) wife, she contacted Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, the Head of the Assembly of Experts, from her hiding place stating "We have come to a point where the grand children of the first chairman of the Judiciary, the late Ayatolla Beheshti, in the wake of the 22nd of Bahman, have to be displaced and live underground because of fears of being arrested by government agents."

Hashemi who was severely affected and shaken by this conversation, visited the leader today, Tuesday and requested the immediate release of Ali Reza Beheshti and putting an end to these "shameful and embarrassing" acts. It looks as though Ali Reza Beheshti may be released soon since Ayatolla Mousavi Ardebili also visited with the leader a few days earlier with a similar request.

At this time, Seyed Mohammad Reza Beheshti, Ali Reza Beheshti's older brother has been waiting outside Evin prison for hours waiting for his brother to be released.

According to the Jaras reporter, in this long meeting, Hashemi Rafsanjani warned the leader on a variety of issues such as the manner in which the country is being run, the turmoil after the elections, the issues related to political prisoners and the press to name a few.

Further details regarding this important meeting will be provided at a later date.

هاشمی با رهبری اتمام حجت کرد، دست از این اقدامات "خجالت آور" بردارید

Negar:
Please note that this article provides a rather "conservative" perspective of what should be done on the 22nd of Bahman, with the goal to minimize violence. It is not my view point, or representative of the view point of all Green supporters. Nor does it mean that everyone attending will decide to follow all of its recommendations. In general, I believe that it provides an important overview of many of the main things to take into considerations for the 22nd of Bahman, and as such should be shared. YOU ARE THE MEDIA.

Key Warnings for the 22nd of Bahman - Please read to the end.

A - The day Before the Demonstrations

1. The presence of the maximum number of people at the protests. Please make sure you encourage everyone you know who is a supporter of the Green movement to attend the protests. Ensure them that there is no risk of danger as the government is not going to use violence on Iran's national day and in the presence of hundreds of foreign journalists.

2. Write slogans where ever you can to encourage people to join the protests on the 22nd of Bahman.

3. If the conditions in other provinces do not allow the Greens to protest, tell your friends and relatives in the provinces to join the protests in Tehran.

4. Bring young children in strollers to the protests dressed in Green symbols.

5. Start preparing Green symbols (such as umbrellas, masks, wrist bands, balloons, flyers, etc.) not only for yourself but also to distribute to others.

6. Don't come to the protests alone. Start telling your friends that they need to come to the protests in groups of at least three people.

7. Start thinking about appropriate clothing and coverage. Use as much coverage as possible so that you are not recognized and so that you can hide Green symbols under them.

8. It's best to dress conservatively and in a non distinct manner so that you don't stick out in the crowd.

9. Don't carry your personal mobile if you have important information saved on it. Instead use temporary phone cards.

10. Since they won't be distributing cake and Sandis juice to you, make sure you think about food and drinks in advance!

11. If possible, try to transport Green flyers to Azadi and Enghelab street before the 22nd of Bahman.

12. On the eve of the 22nd of Bahman, between 10 - 10:15pm shout out Allah O Akbar on your roof tops, in parks or any other place possible and request that the Green supporters attend the protests of 22 of Bahman.

13- Make sure your watch is set correctly so that you can actively participate in the Green movement's march (see bellow for details).

B. The day of the protest

1. Due to lack of media capabilities, inform your friends that as soon as the official government rally hours are announced, the Green should make sure that they arrive to the areas around Azadi and Enghelab at least one hour before.

2. Please refrain from taking out any Green symbols, until you have reached the main protest areas, in other words, Enghelab and Azadi streets, since if you do, it will prevent you from arriving at your destination.

3. Even if faced with violence, refrain from all forms of violence.

4- Show tolerance and kindness towards those who are marching and are not Green supporters. Show respect for their opinions and refrain from inappropriate slogans. Know that some day they too will join the Green movement.

5- Try to use respectful slogans that would be acceptable by all the Greens and the leaders of the Green movement.

6- When faced with disrespectful slogans against the Green leaders, remain patient and walk away graciously.

7- Use fair and balanced slogans to convert the non Greens to Green!

8- Don't protests against or interfere with non green supporters when they are chanting slogans against the Green leaders. However, if they enter the area with cars and loud speakers, puncture their car tires and remove their loud speakers so that they are unable to continue creating disturbances.

9- Don't allow the Islamic Republic of Iran's Broadcasting Corp (IRIB) to take advantage of scenarios similar to the carnival at Ashura when they broadcasted images of Imam Khomeini's picture being torn up or offenses shouted out to Imam Hossein.

10- Take as many pictures and movies as possible.

11. Green symbols and flyers are more important than slogans. You can remain silent but DO NOT forget your GREEN SYMBOLS!

12. Those arriving on the metro, get off at the Navab, Azadi and Sharif University stations and join the protests from there.

13- Treat non Green supporters and even Basijis with respect and kindness.

14- Look out for traps by imposters possibly shouting non appropriate slogans in Green garbs, tearing pictures and setting cars on fire. Do not join them in their activities.

15- It is possible that some will come without Hejab, while others may burn flags. Be careful, don't be fooled, let's not give any excuses to the players.

16- Refrain from showing your Green symbols until you have reached the main protest routes.

17- Because the protests are going to be filmed by foreign reporters and helicopters, it is important to raise your Green symbols every 15 minutes (for example 11:00am, 11:30am , 12:00pm) while chanting Allah O Akbar.

18. The Green movement most remain morally correct. Never offend anyone holding a picture of Ahmadinejad. Do not offend Basijis. Don't forget that in 57 the people went to the streets with the slogan "The army is made up of our brothers, Khomeini is our leader", placing flowers in the pipes of the dictator's tanks.

19- When Ahmadinejad begins his speech, make sure you are at Azadi square and lift your Green symbols and balloons.

20 - It is important to display a long and wide Green scroll at Azadi square during Ahmadinejad's speech.

21- The Green Movement's Resolution: The execution of Mir Hossein Mousavi's 17th statement ( the regime taking responsibility for its recent actions, freedom of press, release of political prisoners, freedom to gather and demonstrate, ability to hold free and healthy elections).

22- The direction for the Green Movements protests is from all streets towards Azadi Square. However, as soon as Ahmadinejad begins to speak the direction will be reversed.

23- Upon the completion of Ahmadinejad's speech, please hide your green symbols and proceed towards your homes. Continuing protests particularly with Green symbols on alternative routes is not advised.
